A good spiritual mentor must have spiritual discernment, not only to see what God is doing in others, but also to understand God’s ways with a mentor. This series of talks and discussions unpacks what many consider to be the best manual on discernment ever penned—Jonathan Edwards’ Religious Affections (1746). The talks will explain the “reliable” and “unreliable” signs of true grace, and discuss what they mean for both mentors and those they counsel. You will take away biblically and theologically sound insights that will deepen your own life with God and further equip you to mentor/disciple others.

Lecture Titles:

Session 1 – The Criteria Christians Typically Use to Discern the Spirit and Why They Are Neither Biblical Nor Trustworthy

Session 2 – The Underlying Motif in God’s Ways with Both Mentors and Those They Counsel

Session 3 – A  New but Biblical Principle for Counseling and Mentoring

Session 4 -  Twin Keys to Spiritual Growth

Gerald McDermott is the Jordan-Trexler Professor of Religion at Roanoke College, where he teaches courses in the history of Christianity and Christian theology of world religions.  He has written, co-written or edited twelve books and scores of articles. He is also Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Baylor Institute for Studies of Religion.

  • Remembering Chuck Colson
We at the C.S. Lewis Institute give thanks to God for the life of our dear friend and brother, Chuck Colson. He was a great example of wholehearted commitment to Christ and His kingdom for people around the world. And he was also great encourager of our work over the years, as a friend, advisor, and in other ways. Our prayers are with Patty and the family during this difficult time. And with them we carry on in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection. Until then, we continue, as Chuck did, to run with perseverance the race that is set before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.Read More...

  • Ten Letters
I've been spending more time in prayer lately, feeling convicted that I need to be listening more and being more open to what God is doing and wants to do in my life.  If you’re like me, you go through periods when busyness crowds out discernment, and activities crowd out time to listen.Read More...

"There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them."
