Image of God Conference

Throughout the history of Christian Theology, the Image of God doctrine has proffered approaches that set forth criteria that those with most severe cognitive disabilities do not possess. How should we view such people? Are they made in the Image of God? Do they deserve the dignity, respect, and care of more typical people? And what type of society should we foster that encourages us to discover, create and solve problems such that people of all capacities benefit and that the efficient allocation of scarce resources is achieved.

George Hammond is the author of It Has Not Yet Appeared What We Shall Be: A Reconsideration of the Image Dei in Light of Those with Severe Cognitive Disabilities (P&R Publishing, 2017). He is the Pastor of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Leesburg, VA and Teaching Fellow for the C.S. Lewis Institute – Loudoun County, VA. He graduated from Westminster Theological Seminary in 1992 with the degree of Master of Divinity, and from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 2014 with the degree of Doctor of Ministry.  Pastor Hammond has contributed to publications like the Westminster Theological Journal and New Horizons, as well as secular periodicals.  He has served as chairman of the candidates and credentials committee of the Presbytery of the MidAtlantic, Orthodox Presbyterian Church. He currently serves on the Committee of Home Missions and Church Extension. Pastor Hammond lives in Loudoun County with his wife Donna and their four children.
