Matters That Matter Forum with Dr. Bryan Hollon

The Bible describes God as utterly transcendent and beyond human understanding while at the same time present with us and knowable in the person of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. In this lecture, Dr. Bryan Hollon will explore this basic paradox of Christian theology and explain its truth and importance. He will describe 14th century philosophical developments, which led Christians in the modern age to neglect this paradoxic to their own detriment before suggesting some ways that it can be retrieved in our own time.

Although the subject matter may sound abstract, the implications for the way we understand and practice Christian faith are significant and should be easy to understand by the end of the lecture. Of special interest will be the way Christians understand and engage the Bible as God’s living Word and means of grace.

In addition to serving as Resident Scholar at the C.S. Lewis Institute of Northeast Ohio, Dr. Hollon is Professor of Theology and Director of the Center for Christian Faith & Culture at Malone University. As a scholar, he specializes in ressourcement theology, which is best exemplified in the work of Henri de Lubac. As an Anglican Priest, serving at St. John's in Canton, Ohio, he is always interested in the ways that Christians and Christian churches engage contemporary culture and struggle to remain faithful to the gospel in different contexts. Dr. Hollon is a proponent of the great consensual tradition that C.S. Lewis referred to as “Mere Christianity,” and his various activities tend to focus on different aspects of this tradition. He and his wife Suzanne met at Baylor University and were married in 1993. They have three children in their teens and twenties.
