Our Institution of High Art

Professor Woltertorff begins this fascinating lecture describing three visions of art in the contemporary world: the expressionist view, the autonomous view, and the Marxist view.  He then moves on to discuss an alternative to these three, namely the need to see art in the modern social context.  However, not all art is “high art”, which is art appreciated by the intellectual/cultured elite. Art for contemplation, listening or perhaps reading. High art is essentially expressed in a unique social context, frequently western.

Due to the archival nature of the recordings, some of the audio content may not be up to today's digital standards, but nonetheless, the content is still applicable.
