Augustine’s Philosophy

The City of God was written as a response to the fall of the Roman Empire in 410 CE.  Many Romans blamed the Christians for the fall stating the Christianity had undermined the traditional pagan societal belief system. Augustine wrote the City of God, in part, to refute this notion. The City of God it divided into two broad sections, the city of man, which is of this world, and the city of God which is eternal. In this work, Augustine develops the first Christian philosophy of history.
