CSLI-Atlanta presents

The Art of the Roman Catacombs:
Themes of Deliverance in the Age of Persecution

with Gregory S. Athnos

Much of Christian art features the crucifixion of Jesus, but when we look further back into the ancient Roman catacombs, we discover a broader story. In the burial chambers of the persecuted Christians, we find hundreds of etchings and frescos that tell of deliverance, the powerlessness of death, and the certainty of the resurrection.

Join us as we reflect on the earliest Gospel messages as depicted by the art of the ancient catacombs.

Date: Thursday, November 21, 2024
Time: 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm ET
Location: Lake Berkeley Chapel | 4043 S Berkeley Lake Rd NW, Berkeley Lake, GA 30096
Cost: $10.00/person

Gregory S. Athnos

Gregory S. Athnos, Professor Emeritus of North Park University, has traveled to Athens, Rome, and throughout the Middle East studying the Art of the early Christians and applying his findings to early Christian practices and the New Testament. Under the auspices of Professor Enrico Jossi (director of the Vatican Museum), Monsignor Bisconti (Vatican archeologist), and Suor Maria Francesca (Archivist of the Roman Catacombs) he has done extensive research in catacomb art and its visual expressions of faith. He is the author of five books: The Easter Jesus and the Good Friday Church; The Art of the Roman Catacombs; Silent Voices; Handel’s ‘Messiah’: A New View of its Musical & Spiritual Architecture and his self-published autobiography Eat in Harmony: A Feast of Life, the Arts, and Faith.
