Highly Recommended Resource

While not required for a Study using the videos, we highly recommend as an additional resource the book The Sacrament of Evangelism, by Jerry Root and Stan Guthrie (Chicago: Moody Publishers, 2011). It covers much of the same subject matter as the videos, but generally from a different perspective, as well as providing additional material on evangelism. Reading the book along with the videos would reinforce what you learn from the videos, as well as provide additional helpful information on sharing your faith.

The book The Sacrament of Evangelism is divided into 20 chapters. If your small group reads the book along with the videos, we suggest reading the book in order, four chapters at a time after each of the first five sessions. The chapters can then be incorporated into the group discussion for the next session. (Note that because the videos are not based on the book, the specific subject matter of the readings for each session will not match that of the video for the session.)

Gospel Presentation

Consider: The most important question in life for anyone is whether they are a Christian, i.e., have you accepted what Jesus Christ has done on your behalf through His death on the cross and His resurrection and asked Him to be your Lord and Savior? As you consider gospel presentation to others, and if you’re not sure about this yourself, we highly recommend the following resources:

Book: The Sacrament of Evangelism, Chapter 17, “Communication”

Chapter 17, “Communication” of the aforementioned book by Jerry Root and Stan Guthrie, includes a section titled “Essential Things: The Gospel”. It cites, and provides an explanation for, the following four points:

1. God loves us.
2. We are estranged from God.
3. Jesus Christ is God’s provision for our sin—through Him we can be forgiven and reconciled to God.
4. We are called to put our trust in Christ.

The chapter also includes sections on “Essential Things: Using Scripture”, “Personal Testimony”, “Essential Things: The Invitation, and “Essential Things: The Choice”. While we recommend the entire book, we believe this chapter would be particularly helpful on the topic of gospel presentation.
