Surprised By Joy

Join CSLI staff for presentation and discussion of C.S. Lewis’s Surprised by Joy, Lewis's spiritual autobiography that traces his journey from childhood atheism to Christian faith.

The book explores Lewis’s lifelong search for a transcendent sense of “Joy” — a fleeting, piercing longing for something beyond the material world — which he later recognizes as a desire for God.

Through reflections on his early life, education, intellectual pursuits, and personal struggles, Lewis reveals how reason, imagination, and an unexpected encounter with divine truth led him to embrace Christianity.

Ultimately, the work is a meditation on how human longing points toward the ultimate fulfillment found in faith in God.
