Blinded Prayer
How often when I kneel before the God of all in prayer,
With head bowed down, hands folded close, eyes shut in pious air,
Then does my gaze turn to myself, confessing sin and pride,
Or laying out my secret hurts, the struggles kept inside.
With gladdened heart I meditate on all his plans for me,
Of all the good He holds in store, my holy destiny.
I thank him for His sacrifice, the many gifts He gives
And ask Him then to always show me how I ought to live.
But if my head is bowed, I cannot look upon my king.
And those whose hands are folded shut do not give anything,
To others or to God, and if my eyes are always closed,
Or turned upon myself, God’s will I cannot see or know.
But when I look to heaven, in the beauty of His grace,
My eyes and hands are opened, and I see my neighbor’s face.
