Jesus Sees Himself as the Fulfillment of All Messianic Prophecies

Music recording by Aimee Riegert and Joel Woodruff. From Standing on the Promises of God by Russell Kelso Carter, 1886. View the Lyrics. Narration by Aimee Riegert.

“Then he (Jesus) said to them (his disciples), “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures . . .”
– Luke 24:44–45
(Luke wrote this around 60 AD)

Usually to know and understand someone’s identity all that’s needed is a simple ID—a driver’s license, a birth certificate, a passport, or maybe a news story or two about that someone. But now imagine hundreds of pieces of information about that someone and that someone keeps telling you that those pieces of information are all about Him, and He astoundingly clarifies every piece. Sounds like a pretty credible person to me.

Jesus knew and clearly communicated to His disciples and enemies alike that what was written in the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms is all about Him. When He spoke about these things He must have made the Hebrew Scriptures jump alive in an entirely new light. He really was the subject of everything they had ever studied or read! He really was the One who had been foretold by the prophets!

Every word of the prophecies of the coming Messiah took on a whole new sense when Jesus spoke of Himself in this manner. His testimony was alive with meaning. Jesus revealed Himself as the messianic fulfillment of all the prophecies of the Old Testament the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms—illuminating how the entirety of the Hebrew Scriptures referred to Him. He Himself was always fully aware of His divinity and of His being the fulfillment of every messianic prophecy, and He proved every word with His life. He “opened their minds” to finally and truly understand.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You that
You are the fulfillment of all
Scripture. Open my mind to be alive to
You in the Scriptures this Advent.
Amen.
